Need constant motivation to exercise?
Are you a committed gym goer or are you one of those casual ones that need constant motivation to exercise?
Fortunately, economists and psychologists have been studying how to crack the code of what compels us to repeatedly do something we don’t always want to do. Here are some of their best strategies.
Give yourself a real reward– A reward is powerful as your brain can latch on to it and make the activity or behavior worthwhile. Hence, everytime you go to the gym and workout, treat yourself to a small reward. Soon the behavior becomes a habit as the brain starts association sweat and pain to the feel good rush that you get after an amazing gym session. Once you recognize that the workout is the reward itself, you can stop treating yourself to extrinsic rewards
Make a pledge in front of friends– Research shows we are more likely to follow through with promises when we make them in front of friends. You can even agree to pay a friend a small sum ( say Rs 50) every time you skip a gym session. Chances of your success is high
Positive thinking– This helps you visualize the benefits of a behavior as a motivational step. Every time you think of going to the gym, visualize a toned body, fit muscles and flat abs. Then make a plan to overcome any obstacle in your mind
Or simply get paid– Find a friend or family member who commits to pay you ( say Rs 100) every time you go to the gym. This can be linked to the first point, where you reward yourself every time you go to the gym. Its not the small amount that matters, but the fact that there is someone out there who would like to make it happen for you.
No matter how you get there, you know you’ve succeeded once the day arrives when you can’t imagine skipping your workout. You can call it an addiction, a pleasure or an escape. But the important thing is that you’re doing it on a regular basis, and that you’re doing it for you.
