THE NOT SO SWEET SIDE OF DIABETES
Is beating Diabetes more than just losing weight?
We all know that excess weight is the prime factor for many diseases. Besides the world seems to accept leaner looking people more graciously than others. In fact the term, ‘weight Loss’ is one of the most searched for keywords on Google.
Does weight loss prevent Diabetes?
When we eat foods with sugar and starch in them, blood sugar levels rise as the sugar is in the blood stream. Insulin, secreted by pancreas, is released immediately in order to break the sugar into glucose to be absorbed by the body. In diabetics, since sufficient insulin is not generated, the sugar remains in the blood stream, causing sugar levels to spike. This could be a genetic factor, passed on within the family or it could be due to excessive fat stored in the waist and belly area. Belly fat can create hormones which suppress insulin secretion, thereby causing insulin resistance or diabetes.
Hence, just lowering your weight does not save you from health risks. Concentrate on where fat is stored in the body. Your Waist to Hip ratio is very important. Divide your waist circumference with that of the hip. An ideal reading should be 0.80 or lower in females and 0.95 or lower in males.
